Canadian Express Entry System - January 2025
Analysis of recent Express Entry draw activity in Canada,s, focusing squarely on draws conducted in early January 2025.
Introduction:
CTIV gives an overview of the Canadian Express Entry system, typifying the recent draws and delineating the trends in the program. This is built on EXPRESS ENTRY DARW, dated January 8, 2025, detailing draws conducted in the early weeks of that year. It presents the structural outlook of Express Entry, recent activities done, prioritisation categories, and future plans laid down by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Main Themes and Findings:
Express Entry System Overview:
The Express Entry is a Canadian immigration system that manages applications made through three main economic immigration programs:
Canadian Experience Class(CEC)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).
It is also applicable for candidates from Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) that align with Express Entry.
This is a candidate-applicant system; individuals first create a profile and are scored under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS); candidates who meet minimum standards are placed into a pool.
Once drawn, the candidate will receive an ITA and shall have, from the date of issuance, 60 days to prepare and submit a complete application for PR to the IRCC: thus, they become now an applicant.
Usually, such a successful applicant acquires PR status and lives, works, and settles here, in this great Canada.
Recent Draw Activity (January 2025):
Draw January 8: IRCC held a CEC-specific draw offering 1,350 ITAs to candidates with a minimum CRS score of 542;
Draw January 7: Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP) draw was held, where 471 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 793 were invited.
These were the first draws of the year 2025 and came after a comparatively quiet December as far as Express Entry invitations were concerned.
The draw today is the second draw this week since a PNP draw on January 7th, which had invited 471 people when the required CRS score for admission was 793."
IRCC issued fewer ITAs in December (2,561) and held fewer draws than in November and October, which issued more than 5,000 ITAs during their six draws.
Prioritization Trends and Category-based Selections-IRCC indicated that those already present in Canada would be given preference for invitation through the In-Canada Focus allocation, which includes both CEC and PNP candidates.
"A preferential selection is given to the candidates who can realize the objectives of Canada's labor market and demographic profile with an application based on the Federal Economic Priorities allocation. Hence, the following categories are prioritized under category-based selection:
Healthcare occupations
Trade occupations
French language proficiency
Whereas nothing else has been declared as extinct, those three were in an entirely different league."
The department has not disclosed publicly that it will end the draw in the remaining three categories, it has just stated that the categories will be prioritized. All six original categories remain valid as of this writing.
Category-based selection, which began in 2023, was set up to allow for targeted selection using candidates' experience and language skills in conjunction with their CRS score.
"In 2023 IRCC also introduced category-based selections so that candidates who already qualified for an Express Entry program could be more selectively chosen based on their professional skills or French language abilities."
Immigration Level Plan & Express Entry's Place:
Express Entry will be the largest single pathway for economic immigration to Canada in 2025.
As part of the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, the IRCC intends to admit 124,590 new immigrants through Express Entry in 2025.
"In 2025, the programs encompassed within Express Entry will cumulatively constitute the largest pathway of economic immigration to Canada. According to the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, in this year alone, IRCC aims to welcome 124,590 new immigrants to Canada."
The Canadian Express Entry remains one of the most significant avenues of economic immigration, with the CEC and PNP being key programs.
Recent drawing activities suggest a potential focus on applicants already in Canada and in sectors aligned with labour market and demographic goals whereby, for instance, healthcare, trades and French language abilities will be in focus by 2025.
The Comprehensive Ranking System remains an important tool but, category-based invitations are another means of invitations.
People looking to immigrate to Canada through Express Entry should have an understanding of these priorities and ensure that their profile reflects the targeted skills and attributes.
The system is competitive. A high CRS score is not always a guarantee of an ITA when prioritisation is given to category-based draws.
Future Actions:
Continue keeping an eye out for Express Entry draw announcements to notice trends and see whether more categories will be prioritised in later draws.
Consistently monitor for updates to the IRCC policies and how they may affect immigration pathways.
