What were the most common occupations of 2023 Express Entry applicants?

In 2023, there were some shifts in the most common occupations among candidates invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry1. While in 2021, there was a higher number of candidates with TEER 2 occupations due to a focus on CEC- and PNP-specific rounds of invitations, candidates with TEER 1 occupations (occupations that usually require a university degree) made up a significant proportion of ITAs in 2022 and 2023.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common primary occupations of Express Entry applicants in 2023, according to the sources:

● Overall, the most common primary occupations among candidates invited to apply were software engineers and designers, software developers and programmers, and food service supervisors. There was an increasing diversity in occupations, with candidates in "other" occupations making up 64% of the ITAs.

● For men, the most common primary occupation was software engineers and designers. Other common occupations for men included software developers and programmers, computer and information systems managers, user support technicians and transport truck drivers.

● For women, the most common primary occupation was also software engineers and designers24. Other common occupations for women included food service supervisors, administrative assistants, administrative officers, and professional occupations in advertising, marketing and public relations.

● For candidates assigned Arranged Employment points, the most common occupation was software engineers and designers5. In 2023, there was a greater diversity among the TEER categories of the top 15 occupations for candidates with arranged employment, including TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 occupations.

It's worth noting that there were some differences in the most common occupations between men and women. For example, some occupations that were in the top 15 for men were not in the top 15 for women, and vice-versa.

The sources also provide information on the most common occupations of candidates assigned Arranged Employment points, with software engineers and designers being the most common. There was a greater diversity in the TEER categories of the top 15 occupations, including management occupations, and occupations that usually require a university degree or a college diploma
